An American, I have lived in five countries, since December 1985 in The Netherlands. My own identity and personal development have been greatly influenced and defined by my own intercultural experiences. I also believe that intercultural experiences have given me a much greater understanding of society as a whole, of what makes people tick and how people deal with each other than I might have had without these experiences.
For this reason, John’s vision for Atlantic Bridge captured my heart and I can proudly say that I have been a part of the development of AB from even before day one, when the vision was still being formed and begin given form. I remain a firm believer in the value of cross-cultural experiences for personal and spiritual development and for this reason, continue to support the work of AB by helping to train its volunteers. I really like Atlantic Bridge’s vision and I like to make other people enthusiastic for that vision.
For me the most exciting part is to work with and lead young people to a more open minded personality. Being open minded for other cultures and faiths without loosing their own identity. Also important to me is to give youth knowledge about Christianity and positive experiences with Christians, so that they have the possibility to make a choice. Every year I feel a tincy wincy bit nervous about the new volunteers that come to work with Atlantic Bridge but every year it's a joy to share our home with them. I learn so much from them, not just about the volunteers themselves, their culture and language. But I learn about having compassion, loving others like God loves and about listening and being there for others. It's exciting , fun and sometimes challenging. It's also good for my children to learn about sharing their time, food and home with others. And the kids almost always end up being great friends with the volunteers.
