An American, I have lived in five countries, since December 1985 in The Netherlands. My own identity and personal development have been greatly influenced and defined by my own intercultural experiences. I also believe that intercultural experiences have given me a much greater understanding of society as a whole, of what makes people tick and how people deal with each other than I might have had without these experiences.
For this reason, John’s vision for Atlantic Bridge captured my heart and I can proudly say that I have been a part of the development of AB from even before day one, when the vision was still being formed and begin given form. I remain a firm believer in the value of cross-cultural experiences for personal and spiritual development and for this reason, continue to support the work of AB by helping to train its volunteers. When people hear that I’m a Canadian they always want to know how I came to Atlantic Bridge and the small town of Kruiningen in rural Netherlands. So I thought I should tell the story here! In the winter of 2002 I was in Canada, working and thinking that it was time to try something new. With the help of a Christian job bank I heard about Atlantic Bridge and the job they had available as office manager. In February I emailed John, asking for information. Since I didn’t hear back from him I gave up on it, thinking this wasn’t the right place for me. But suddenly, in September I got a reply! After various conversations by email and telephone, I decided to quit my job and come to the Netherlands for a three-month trial period. I arrived in January 2003 and both John and I knew within several weeks that this was the right thing for both of us. In May I went back to Canada to raise funds, prepare to move, etc and I came back in July 2003. Initially I came for three years, which has now turned into six (2009)! It’s been a fun, interesting, difficult, fantastic, amazing, challenging, inspiring, better-and-worse-than-I-ever-thought-it-could-be trip so far!

I really like Atlantic Bridge’s vision and I like to make other people enthusiastic for that vision.
For me the most exciting part is to work with and lead young people to a more open minded personality. Being open minded for other cultures and faiths without loosing their own identity. Also important to me is to give youth knowledge about Christianity and positive experiences with Christians, so that they have the possibility to make a choice. Every year I feel a tincy wincy bit nervous about the new volunteers that come to work with Atlantic Bridge but every year it's a joy to share our home with them. I learn so much from them, not just about the volunteers themselves, their culture and language. But I learn about having compassion, loving others like God loves and about listening and being there for others. It's exciting , fun and sometimes challenging. It's also good for my children to learn about sharing their time, food and home with others. And the kids almost always end up being great friends with the volunteers.

I've done quiet a lot of exchanges when I was a youth leader. When I was a marketing student in 1996 I did market research for Atlantic Bridge about Bridgebuilders. I love the concept and now that I'm on staff I love to see how it can serve young people these days.
